Club secretary Steve Jackson said they are addressing all NSW government and police requirements.
Licensing essentially comes down to ensuring high safety standards for both spectators and drivers. The track is an old go-cart track adjacent to the motor complex on the Ashford Road and meets council requirements.
The club has about 30 members who are very enthusiastic, and keen on creating their own riding speed machines.
Club vice president Brad Hannah's current ride is a cherry red hybrid Victa Corvette up front and a Viking back end.
“So I just started off with two mowers that were worn out and thrown away; they were going to the rubbish tip and I just merged the two together and I’m only running a 20 horsepower mower,” Hannah said.
He modified the machine with a safety brake to kill the engine on the dash, his throttle is mounted on the steering wheel and it has disc brakes, but still runs on a standard Briggs and Stratton motor.
Jackson said they remove the factory installed governors from the mowers to beef up the speed, but all mowers are limited to a 30hp lawnmower engine, and must look 70 per cent like a mower. The mini racers can get to a speed of 60kph.
“We do have specifications that everybody has to comply with as far as engine, horsepower, the width of the machines, all the sharp edges have to be covered over,” Hannah said.
Hannah said anybody who wants to build a mower or has an interest is invited to club meetings at the showgrounds to learn about their guidelines and specifications. They meet on the last Wednesday of the month.
The club is extremely democratic, according to Jackson. All members to have a say or discuss anything of concern. They also have a very altruistic side and support both the Inverell Refuge and White Ribbon events against violence against women.
