It was audition day, and while nervous performers prepared for the singing roles at the school, supervised by school theatre teacher and show director Ben Daley, over 30 students arrived at Craze Dance Academy to show off their moves for a dance role.
Craze principal Laura King has assumed the role as choreographer for the 10 routines, and cast her eye over the talent in the form of very enthusiastic teenagers.
She led the students through a round of warm-ups before the aspiring performers lined up to spin, leap, cartwheel and sashay across the studio.
Some showed they had some experience under their belts and spun like tops over the floor. Others collapsed into giggles halfway across the room, and showed it was more about fun and friends
After learning and performing the audition routine, a few dancers stayed behind. Year 8 student Lauren Mangano agreed the best part of the session was spending time with her friends, and enjoyed learning the dance.
The worst part?
“The heat,” she said, mopping her brow in the humid afternoon. All the kids had a workout, but they were all through to the show, and the atmosphere was one of jubilance.
The students will come for Tuesday rehearsals with a polish up at the Town Hall before the final performances.
Laura said the biggest challenge would be tailoring the choreography to the range of ability and planned to use the more experienced dancers and teachers as mentors to help her out. She said she was pleased with the positive energy during the audition.
“They were great weren’t they?” she grinned.
Back at the high school, Ben said he was impressed by the level of communal support at the singing audition.
“Obviously, they’re all vying for a role, and to be part of the production, they’re all really supportive of each other, which is wonderful to see,” he said.
