The day will feature guest speakers Robyn Hitchcock who was travelled the world, and worked specifically with empowering women for several years in Mongolia. Inverell High School student Hannah Worsley is also speaking to the group from her perspective as a woman of a younger generation. The 2015 international theme is Make it Happen, and tables will be asked to brainstorm about what they would like to see happen in Inverell Shire. Inverell councillors Jacki Watts and Di Baker are hosting the event, and both share the hope that valuable ideas and energy for change will come from the discussion and the day.
“International Women’s Day is about gathering together, in a local situation, but also realising it’s about connecting with women throughout the world,” Cr Watts said. She pointed out that gender inequality in income and underrepresentation in all levels of government and in big business still exists in Australia. She said there needed to be consideration of equality.
“And equality isn’t about one-upmanship, or I’m better than you. It’s about treating each other with respect,” Cr Watts said. She agreed and felt the inherent freedoms from violence, and human rights should exist in internationally.
“I think both genders have their strengths and weaknesses, and they should be seen almost as genderless when it comes to things like being treated with respect, getting an education, having access to health services, if it’s mental or physical, and even being represented in organisations, on boards, in local government,” Cr Watts said. “It shouldn’t be whether a woman or a man. It should be just who you are.”
The International Women’s Day Morning Tea is at 9am at the Inverell Art Gallery. Tickets for the event are $12, and can be purchased at council. Please RSVP by noon today to council for catering purposes on 6728 8288.
