“We had a good turnout and the water temperature was 23.7 degrees, measured on the day for all the people who were worried about the cold water. It was absolutely superb, I swam in it myself,” Mr Lamrock said.
He said it was good to meet Trent Grimsey, who defeated his nearest rival by 26 minutes the 5 kilometres male section with a time of 1.09.21
Mr Lamrock said this year’s swim was attended by 132 competitors, down slightly on last year, but a good number nevertheless.
“We attribute that to it being school holidays, but we reckon we had a bit bigger spectator crowd this year,” Mr Lamrock said.
The female swim was won for the third year in a row by Madeline Nilon from
Caniaba in a time of 1.20.04,
“She’s going to be able to buy a house with the money she’s won from us,” Mr Lamrock joked.
The 2.5 kilometres male swimmer was Richie Goddard from Hermani in a time 38.47. The female winner was Ellie Camilleri, a talented swimmer from Tamworth, who came in with a stronger time of 38.43, better than her male rivals. The 600 metres swim was won by Richie Goddard and Ellie Camilleri with Camilleri crossing the line first in 8.27.
The new under 14s event junior male winner was by Joshua Elbourne from Moree in 10.04, and junior female winner Jacinta Ballard from Muswellbrook finished in a time of 11.15.
Mr Lamrock said planning for next year’s event was already underway, and at this stage he thought the event may return to its original date on the Anzac Day long weekend.
“The main thing that scares us during the year and to during the lead-up to it is the weather,” Mr Lamrock said.
