While the fishing was not fantastic, there were just rewards for some who persevered for the two days.
Professional angler Zac Conn led the way when he caught and released a total of 15 fish at Copeton Dam during the competition. Conn’s bag included Yellow Belly, Cat Fish and a single Red Fin. Conn accumulated 2736 points, which was enough to take out the men’s division. Runner-up among the males was new member Paul McKinnon, who was able to land two Cod upstream from the dam for a total score of 1240 points.
It was also good to see Louise Cleal, who has been dominant in the female ranks for a number of years, come out of her hiatus and win the ladies division with 620 points. Louise had been frustrated in recent months with her boat captain’s inability to put her near fish, so she took to her own kayak and was able to lure up a nice 62cm Cod.
Unfortunately, despite their efforts, none of the club juniors landed a fish they were able record for the competition.
The fishing club will host a special mother’s day camp outing at Copeton Northern Foreshores on the third weekend in May, which will see the focus on all the female members of the club.
