FOR once, I found myself agreeing with deputy mayor and Chamber of Commerce president Anthony Michael (Inverell Times, Friday, April 17) when he was noted saying proudly, “Our CBD is so beautiful.”

He went on to refer to our “boutique-style shopping district” and the fact that “tourists as well as visitors love to come here” and then he went onto state that Moree alone “delivers about 20 per cent of the customers.”
Cr Michael doesn’t state it but surely he can see that an essential factor that contributes to Inverell’s beauty is the Plane trees!
Inverell’s CBD was not beautiful before 1997; today it is and this factor while unattributed is in large part attracting the tourists and visitors from outlying districts. It is with bemusement that I note how his comments on page 13 and those of the mayor Paul Harmon on the preceding page are accompanied by photographs of the CBD looking beautiful with its Plane trees.
Come on – why get rid of an asset (that in cities such as Melbourne are perceived as having an appreciated monetary value) when a detailed tree assessment or inventory has yet to be compiled?
The Plane trees and the existing layout do contribute to the beauty of the CBD. It would be wise not to underestimate their value.
