Mr Heard, from Victoria, has written two books, one dealing with World War I and the other, his own account of young farm boy to National Service to now 70-year-old man.
He commented that politicians and the media are there in numbers as young service people leave Australia's shores with notions of 'democracy, terrorism, nationalism, communism and freedom', but these are quickly discarded for the critical practicalities of “mates helping mates do a job”.
Perhaps of more importance, he said many years down the track politicians, media and the public do forget. And that complicates things-a lot!
Barry's accounts show the light ahead and are uplifting and humorous.
He presents regularly to school groups, service clubs and public gatherings. His Inverell talk will be followed by similar events at UNE Armidale and Southern Cross University, Coffs Harbour.
Senior High School and tertiary students will also be encouraged to enter a northern NSW simple competition around this theme with $1000 prizes and university bursaries.
Entries are welcome for this by Remembrance Day, November 11, 2015.
A gold coin entry will gain you entry on Thursday and support Inverell Legacy. It starts at 1pm.
