Australian Red Cross has launched an appeal to help people in the devastated areas of the country and Colleen asked everyone who can to donate.

“All the funds donated will be directed to disaster relief and recovery to help continue the Red Cross emergency services work in Nepal,” Colleen said.

“Red Cross has always been committed to helping in disasters around the world and at home when needed, and we are very proud of our humanitarian work over the last 100 years.”

Head of International Programs at Australian Red Cross Peter Walton said the quake brought down many buildings in the most densely-populated areas of Kathmandu. 

“It’s now a race against time to rescue those trapped under rubble, help the injured and support the survivors,” Mr Walton said.

“Tragically, more bodies are being pulled from collapsed buildings every hour. Communication is down in many areas. Widespread destruction, rubble and landslides are preventing access to provide aid in many villages.

“Local Red Cross teams have been working tirelessly since the quake. They are administering first aid to the injured, rushing blood supplies to medical centres. and providing shelter, food and water.

Mr Walton said immediate priorities are search and rescue, food, safe drinking water and shelter.

“We are very concerned for the safety and wellbeing of thousands of people in Nepal and across the region,” he said.

“We ask all Australians to please make a donation to the Nepal Region Earthquake Appeal to help the many thousands of people affected by this destructive earthquake.”
