TripAdvisor reached 42 countries and had about 260 million monthly visitors. Its branded sites made up the largest travel community in the world, and its reviews and opinions covered more than 4 million accommodations, restaurants and attractions.
Mayor Paul Harmon said it was the people who had used the centre who had judged it.
“In my mind, that makes it even more special,” Cr Harmon said.
“I’m very proud. We’ve got a very capable staff down there under the leadership of Peter Caddey.
“It’s amazing, just the little things that people look for. I was talking to Peter last weekend, and we were talking about the fact that some people just buy a little specialised chutney that’s made locally.”
Cr Harmon said as well as a wide range of generalised tourist material, the centre had ‘boutiquey’ things that could only be found in Inverell.
“Not just sapphires, but all the local produce as well,” he said. Visitor Information Centre manager Peter Caddey said he and his staff were absolutely thrilled and humbled to receive the award.
“Basically it is from all of the reviews we receive from all of the customers who come through,” Mr Caddey said.
“We do our very best to provide the best service we can, and obviously we’ve been able to do that on a number of occasions.”
Mr Caddey said the team at the centre was fantastic.
“We’re very, very fortunate. We’ve got people who just bend over backwards to help the visitors when they come through. They go beyond the call of duty.”
Mr Caddey said the visitor centre averaged between 60,000 to 70,000 visitors a year, and many people commented on the layout of the centre and how helpful it was.
