The event has been running since the late 1960’s, and IHS sports organiser, Denise Bryant, said many sports were contested.
“We’ve got all year groups, sevens through to 12s in netball, three teams in each of the girls and boys soccer, rugby league, boy’s and girl’s basketball, boy’s and girl’s touch, boy’s and girl’s volleyball, hockey, ten pin bowling and fishing. I think I’ve covered them all,” Bryant said. Bryant said the students appreciate the sports day.
“After the visits were stopped from the middle of 2000, the Student Representative Council, particularly from Armidale, were really driven to get it going again,” Bryant said.
“The kids who are here for the day will often play more than one sport.”
For one student the morning started at 7am at the river, where he lost a lure on a big Cod.
“We try to cater for all kids, so that’s why we have the fishing, the ten pin bowling, and whatever else we can do so that we can try to have all kids interested in the day, not just the really sporting ones,” Bryant said.
“We have a teacher who brings an esky for the IHS fish that we catch, or release, actually.”
For IHS the catch of the day was a 10 kilogram Yellow Belly, while the Armidale anglers came up with a Carp. “So, by quality of fish, Inverell has won that particular round,” Bryant said.
