It was an afternoon of wins that Hawks club president Garry Lavender said started with the League Tag, which was back in the winner’s circle with a confident display of league.
“It the result that we’ve been looking for,” Lavender said.
“Obviously points for and against will come down to these finals, so the more points we can rack up, the better off we’ll be.”
Lavender said the Hawks were also on the wrong end of a 12-3 penalty count that didn’t do their own cause a great deal of good.
“But we did pretty well. We scored some good tries off some set plays that we’ve been working on for weeks,” Lavender said.
“Most of the boys are putting it together and doing what’s expected from the coach.”
Lavender said the day saw a big crowd in attendance for the morning’s minor league games that commenced at 8.30am.
The second half of the A grade match was played under lights.
“It was the die hards who stayed into the night, and they were entertained with some good tries,” Lavender said.
The round’s results leave the Hawks in second place on the ladder.
This Saturday will be the Hawk’s Old Boy’s Day which has proved to be a very popular event among past players.
“It’ll be a massive day. We’ve moved it from downstairs to upstairs,” Lavender said.
“By all indications there are quite a few of them coming back. It’s a great response for something that’s been thrown together at short notice.”
Lavender said hopefully the day will be crowned with a big win against the Moree Boars.
“Virtually it is a must win for us. We have to keep on winning our home games from here on in. We can’t afford to lose one now,” Lavender said.
That resolve is sure be tested when the Hawks come up against last year’s premiers, the Moree Boomerangs, on the first weekend of August at Varley Oval.
