Hawks’ president Garry Lavender was pleased with the win and full of praise for the Hawks players.
“The whole club’s really pleased,” he said.
“The huge crowd witnessed a great game of football.”
Lavender said the crowd was absolutely huge.
“It was a semi-final crowd, and it filled Varley Oval,” Lavender said.
“It was a hard game. There were a few errors in patches and a bit of stop-start, but we controlled it a bit better and came away with the win.”
Lavender said it was not a time to rest on their laurels. He said this week’s game against Glen Innes and then Warialda following that both had the potential to test the Hawks if they let their guard down.
“If we lose one or both of those games, it will undo all the good work we’ve put in,” he said.
Lavender said the Hawks players turned up well after the game.
“It was a good result all round. There were no injuries and no send-offs,” Lavender said.
After being behind 14-12 at half-time, the Hawks managed to come back during the second-half, in a game that saw some big encounters from the forwards. Lavender said coach Pete Stevens was very happy with the front row’s performance.
The Hawks also won in the League Tag, Under 18s, Reserve grade.
This weekend they will travel to Glen Innes for another very important match.
