INVERELL Hawks sat out a bye on the weekend, but all eyes were on the minor semi-final played between Ashford and the Moree Boars at Broughton Oval in Moree on Saturday. The Boars won that encounter (54-16) to take their place in the final on September 5.

The big game this weekend is between the Inverell Hawks and the Moree Boomerangs, to be played at Varley Oval. The winner of this game will go straight into the grand final, while the loser will now play the Boars to secure a spot there as well.
Hawks season will not be over if they should lose Sunday’s game, but club president Garry Lavender said he would prefer a win, and he thinks the Hawks has the depth to do just that.
“The whole club is looking forward to Saturday’s challenge,” Lavender said.
“The boys are definitely fit enough. The season’s almost over, so if you’re not fit now you’re never going to be, and we’re pretty much injury free.”
Lavender said the side would not be over-confident, but would go in to play good football.
“Just hold that ball and don’t turn possession over,” he said.
He said not completing their sets had been a problem earlier this year for the Hawks.
“We turned it over in the early counts; Second or third tackle, even the first tackle at some stages, but hopefully the coach has got the gremlins out,” Lavender said.
“But I think the boys will be all focussed this week.”
With the Hawks on their way towards a grand final, Lavender said the last grand final won by the Hawks was in 2011, and this year its reserve grade side remains undefeated and so to the under 18s.
