Uralla Shire Council is considering trucking water into the village when severe droughts hit as the council’s Drought Management Plan shows that Bundarra has a “relatively low level of supply security”.
The plan, which was adopted by council on Monday night, said Bundarra’s supply was vulnerable due to periods of low flow and impacted by upstream irrigators.
To combat the risk of water supplies dwindling, the council’s drought plan outlines strategies for
Bundarra’s water supply, ranging from low to emergency status.
Measures kick into action when the water source falls down to 64 per cent capacity.
Once the levels sink to 32 per cent, the council will investigate trucking water in.
Bundarra’s emergency water supply would come from Gilgai.
However, this strategy will only be implemented in the case of extreme drought, with council to restrict outdoor water usage in the lead-up to such conditions in a bid to conserve water. Currently, Bundarra’s water supply is at full capacity.
The drought plan was made in response to findings that council needed to put long-term drought solutions in place before severe conditions hit.
“When preparing budgets for the year ahead, council will need to ensure that if drought conditions are expected … sufficient funds are set aside for drought management activities,” the report said.
