“(We’re) celebrating that God has been there outreaching to the people for 100 years”, said Kaye Toole, who liaisons between All Saints and the Inverell St Augustine’s Parish.
The church was built mostly by local volunteers in 1915 and boasted of a congregation of 152 on its opening day.
All Saints was an active part of the Gilgai community in its heyday, and often ran tennis tournaments, harvest festivals and carols by candlelight. Today, there are around 18 regular attendees to the bi-monthly services.
The small congregation is keen to expand and continues to hold dear the words spoken by Rev Canon at their first service; “Let this be a living church growing up in a holy priesthood”.
Parishioner Madge Roberts moved to Gilgai when she was nine years old. Despite moving to Inverell in recent years, still regularly attends All Saints. She said she feels her roots in the small church, which is close to her heart.
Madge has strong memories of the impressive sound of the old pedal organ which now sits idle.
“It’s more family than anything,” she said of the tiny congregation.
A booklet on the history of All Saints is being prepared and will be given out at the celebratory service.
“It’s had quite a little journey, but it’s still as solid as a rock” said Kaye.
The Bishop of Armidale the Reverend Rick Lewers will officiate the commemoration.
There will be a 10am service followed by a barbecue lunch. Ministers Rev Adam Draycott and Rev Nick Stone will participate. All are welcome to attend and show their support.
