Now a $150,000 major upgrade will build a new canteen and new brick amenities block including dressing rooms for teams and officials and public toilets.
The new facilities will be financed on a dollar-for-dollar basis by the club and a grant from the NSW Footy Facilities Fund. Club president Mick Lewis thanked the Member for Northern Tablelands, Adam Marshall, for his support.
Mr Lewis said it was gratifying to know the NSW Government and NRL were keen to support small rural community projects.
“This is great news. We’re really looking forward to getting this project going,” Mr Lewis said.
“We just need approval from the council and then we will get some tenders out. Inverell Shire Council has been very supportive so it shouldn’t be too long.
“We have a lot of community support in Ashford so it will be great to be able to provide more comfortable facilities for our players and patrons.”
Mr Marshall said he was delighted Ashford had been successful in its application.
“Every time I visit Ashford Mick Lewis is quick to point out the need to make facilities more comfortable for players, visitors and supporters, so this is great news for the club and the town and I’m pleased to see more funding coming Ashford’s way,” Mr Marshall said.
“It’s impressive this small rural sporting club has raised the funds for this upgrade. It’s a great indication of the support they have in the community.
“I commend Ashford Rugby League club, its players and supporters, for their huge contribution to the project, as well as the critical financial support of Inverell Shire Council.”
Mr Marshall said rugby league was a big part of life in Ashford and he was looking forward to seeing this latest improvement project get underway.
