Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall visited members of the Inverell Mower Racing Club at what will be Australia’s first racing mower track on Friday.
Wearing a tie and dress shoes, Marshall eagerly took to the track twice on club vice-president Brad Hannah’s 20hp, cherry red Victa racer.
“I used to race go-carts as a kid, and I absolutely loved it,” Marshall said.
“I suppose some people would look at my driving record, and say I haven’t given up,” he grinned.
Hannah felt a visit from the local member was a good endorsement for the very family-friendly group, with machines that reach speeds of 80 kph.
“Absolutely, it means a lot to the club to actually have Adam turn up and show some interest in the club, and we really appreciate it,” he said.
Hannah said he saw future opportunities for Marshall on a mower.
“He looks very, very comfortable on the machine.”
The club is renovating a former go-cart track on Crown Land on the Ashford Road.
Secretary Jacko Jackson said they have secured a three-year license to operate.
Jackson said the sport is international, with some European clubs searing down their mower tracks.
“They run more grades in horsepower because they’ve been going longer there,” Jackson said.
“In Germany and Finland, they’re running big motorbike engines.” Club publicity officer Ashleigh Taylor gave the local Member a run for his money on a club member Adam Edwards’ 22hp John Deere. But her mower is not ready to compete just yet.
“It’s still one that cuts grass,” she said with a smile.
