Inverell, it seems, is absolutely fascinated with its own history. From old school photos, to pictures of the 1991 flood, to photocopies of old chip packets; locals are flocking to Allison Lane’s Facebook page, ‘Inverell and Surrounding Districts Memories’, to share their own piece of town history.

Allison created the page just over two weeks ago, but membership has already skyrocketed to more than 4600 people, and the wealth of historic images has inspired a book.
“It’s just exploded. It’s just unbelievable how it’s grown,” she said.
“It’s insane, is what it is.”
Allison believed people’s personal histories in the area inspired their love of the page.
“Well I think it brings back all these beautiful memories of what happened in Inverell in the past,” she said.
“And people are saying, ‘Oh, I remember that building, and before that one was there, there was this one. Remember such and such owned that shop?”
Members from all over the world have come together to connect with old friends and memories.
The page has been so successful, local historian Sharon Froome is creating an ‘Inverell Memories’ book she hopes to finish by the end of next year.
Interested parties are invited to send high resolution photos to inverellmemories@gmail.com for consideration.
Allison admitted they were spoilt for choice.
“I don’t know if she’ll ever finish it.”
“All I did was start it. It’s all the people that are contributing to the page and posting photos that have made it so successful, it’s just an idea that I had.” Allison said she was just along for the ride.
“I just want people to keep the memories flowing, that’s what it’s all about.”
