The program encourages those with library fines to donate non-perishable food to be given to St Vincent De Paul for Christmas hampers in place of their fines. 

“Basically you can clear your overdue fines with a few items of food,” library manager Sonya Lange said. Each item donated is the equivalent of $3 of fines. 

This is the fourth year for the program, and Sonya said regulars are starting to look forward to it.

“A few people who know we do it regularly, say ‘When are you starting?’. People know about it, who are regular library users, and they are very happy to do it,” she said. 

She also promised that altruistic locals don’t need to have library fines to donate.

“Most people are very happy to make a donation, whether or not they do have fines”. Sonya said parents often like to bring their children in to make a donation and learn about the importance of giving.

Most years, the library donates around five boxes full of food for those in need, making a difference for many families during the holiday season. 

Sonya said some people pack ‘Christmas cheer’ items, while others bring pantry staples. 

She said anything is welcome.

“We encourage everybody to take the opportunity to either make a donation of goods or clear their fines and start the year with a clean slate,” Sonya said.

Locals can donate food to the library until Saturday, December, 12. The boxes will be delivered the following Monday.
