It is year four for the unique Inverell fitness fun day, and its youngest competitors will face the Obstacool for the first time, a massive inflatable course at the Inverell Rugby Park event.
The Obstacool requires balance and climbing, sliding, running and bouncing their way around the air-fuelled course.
After two laps of the Obstacool, the kids will prove their kid-ness by climbing hay bales, scrambling through mud and sand, leaping and crawling and climbing; all the things kids, and especially country kids do best.
Helping out their fellow teammates is critical to the win, but for kids, throw competition out the window; it is all about fun.
Toughen Up founder Lynn Lennon said the effect of the event came home at a recent community development training session.
“And they started to talk about putting together an event, and I thought, ‘Hang on a minute, we already do that’,” she said.
“That has been the biggest win of Toughen Up; that we started with basically zero dollars, people gave and supported and attended because they wanted to.
“And from there it grew.”
She said the event expanded the concept of fitness, and embraced all ages and abilities.
“It doesn’t matter if you were a really fit person, or you’re a bit of a couch potato and you decided a week before to get off the lounge chair,” Lynn said.
“It’s just about the community having a really good day.”
Registrations close Friday, February 5 at 5pm.
The 72 adult teams of four are nearly filled for the Toughen Up, but there are plenty of spaces for the two-child junior teams for ages five-nine and 10-12.
Registrations may be made in Bikes in Byron, Pro-Active Fitness, Anytime Fitness or Pathfinders or through inverelltoughenup.net.
A pop-up registration table will be set up at Kamilaroi Park at 5.45pm on February 3 at Inverell Junior Touch.
Volunteers are still needed for the event and may phone Lynn on 0417 788 673 for more information.
