Ruckmen giants Tom Derickx and Callum Sinclair are scheduled to arrive Monday afternoon for a 5-6pm AFL super clinic on Monday at Varley Oval, the Inverell Saints training session from 6-7pm and school visits next Tuesday morning.
Children aged five-16 years are invited to participate in the 5pm free super clinic with the Swans, who will stay for a meet and greet with autographs during the event.
AFL NSW/ACT development manager Matt Crawley said Inverell has been highly supportive of the sport.
“There is a junior competition starting out there, this year, so hopefully that will draw even more,” he said.
“And we found the Inverell people are really driving it well. Volunteers are really, really important for us.
“We’re finding that Inverell are becoming one of the best centres, if you like, in the North West.”
Monday’s event is the beginning of several AFL and Auskick programs.
Junior training for the Inverell Saints begins 5pm on Thursday, February 11 at Brooks Oval.
Inverell AFL publicity officer Sonia Martin stressed all youth aged 12-15 were welcome and skill level was not important, just a willingness to try and a great attitude.
AFL 9’s competition kicks off with modified AFL rules on February 26 as a round robin ending with two week finals series.
Boys and girls aged 12-16 are invited to come along.
Cost is $15 for the season and games are to be played Friday nights.
Auskick will have two ‘come and try days’, with 10 Friday clinics to follow, from February 26-June 3 at McCosker Oval.
Boys and girls aged five-13 (or four turning five) are welcome.
Sonia added that several local youth were successful in the Northern Inland Academy of Sports (NIAS) AFL squad trials.
Inverell-based players Marli Gobbert, Joshua Desborough, Ben Ellis, Lachie Martin, and Cody McGillvray and Eleanore Ford, the only female to make the squad, are now in the NIAS side, and attended an induction and growth day at Armidale on Saturday, January 30.
