The Kamilaroi man could not remember when he did not have a pen or brush in his hand.
His mother Elaine McIntosh, known as Wibble, was a powerful influence, and set Rod and his two brothers along the pathway to art.
He said he and his brothers bounce ideas off each other and share the journey.

The generational connections is now embedded in his daughters who are painting and drawing right beside Rod.
He said he finds himself going bush more frequently these days to absorb the power and detail of nature in a way that went unnoticed or unappreciated in the past.
“Not a year doesn’t go by without me picking up something that I missed before, because I’m taking the time to look a lot deeper and closer at it, and to listen more,” he said.
“I think it’s more or less coming from listening to the elders more, too and I think there’s a need for it to be done, now more than ever.
Common Ground’s opening starts at 5.30pm on Friday, February 19, with a $10 entry and bar operating.
The show runs through April 7 during gallery hours with a gold coin donation entry.
