The pasture updates have been organised by Local Land Services pasture agronomists, Georgie Oakes and Jeff Lowien.
“We’ll be talking about the establishment and management of new pastures, looking at seeding rates, varieties, nutrition, planting windows, seed bed preparation, and weed management,” Georgie said.
“We’re also looking at established pastures at each of the field day locations.
The pasture mix on ‘Strathfield’, which is hosting our Inverell update, was planted back in 2008 to a mix of tropical pastures including rhodes, panic, and blue grass, as well as lucerne and chicory.
“Despite the several long dry spells we’ve had since then, that pasture is still thriving and the cows and calves grazing on that paddock look magnificent.
“It’s a great example of the initial investment paying off,” Georgie said.
The Northern Tablelands Pastures Agronomists field many inquiries about pasture management, particularly about the best mix of varieties to plant and nutrient requirements.
“Georgie said pasture establishment can be seen as an initially expensive investment.
“However everybody’s situation is different, depending on each producer’s long term goals and the type of operation they’re running,” she added.
NSW DPI Pasture Research Agronomist Carol Harris will update farmers at the Inverell event, on the latest research on pastures in the region.
Carol will talk about new temperate and tropical pasture varieties and discuss her research work on the noxious weed, Chilean Needle Grass (Nasella neesiana), which is becoming increasingly prevalent on the Northern Tablelands.
The Inverell day will take place at Strathfield, on Auburn Vale Rd, Tuesday, February 23, 9.30am-12.30pm.
