At least one blast blamed on suicide bomber
The Belgian federal prosecutor has confirmed that the three blasts in Brussels (two at the airport and one in the Maelbeek subway station) were the work of terrorists.
One of the blasts is believed to be a suicide bomber.
Julie Bishop condemns attack, urgently seeking news on Australians in the area
The Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop has just released the following statement:
"The Australian Government condemns what appears to be coordinated terror attacks on Belgium. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the people of Belgium.
"DFAT is urgently seeking to determine if any Australians have been affected.
"I have spoken with our Ambassador Mark Higgie for an assessment of the situation and confirm that our diplomatic staff are safe.
"If you have any concerns for the welfare of family and friends in the region you should attempt to contact them directly.
"If you are unable to contact them and still hold concerns for their welfare you should call the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade 24 hour Consular Emergency Centre on 1300 555 135 or +61 2 6261 3305 if calling from overseas".
"This is a dark moment for our nation"
Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has just addressed the media.
"We know there are many dead, many injured," he said.
"What we feared has happened, we were hit by blind attacks.
"I call on you to remain calm and solidarity in this situation."
Commuters walk in darkness along the metro tracks
After a blast struck the Maalbeek Metro Station, those travelling in train carriages were reportedly told to get off and walk through smoke to the next station. The city's metro system has been closed down.
