His club has started this season with four straight wins. Admittedly it’s early days yet, but so far, it is one of the best starts to a season for many years, and he puts it down to strong numbers and youth in the team.
“We’ve started well. We’ve had a massive change of personnel this year. We’ve got a lot more younger players, some new players to town playing for us,” Gobbert said.
“We were only talking on the weekend, that it’s probably the lowest average age of our side that we’ve ever had. I think we have only four players over 30.”
He said the teams average age was about 25 and that was great!
“We can sit on the sideline and watch,” he said, then laughed.
Gobbert said there were three standout teams again this year, as there were every season.
“There’s us, Tamwoth Kangaroos and the New England Nomads. We sort of fight it out between the three of us, but we haven’t played the Nomads yet,” he said.
Gobbert said the Saints defeated the Tamworth Swans at Varley Oval quite easily in the first round. The team then travelled to Tamworth in the second round and won against the Tamworth Kangaroos, then defeated the Moree Suns in round three. Saints then took down the Narrabri side at Narrabri by 202 points.
“Narrabri have lost their four best players from last year, so they cam on a bit under strength,” Gobbert said.
“And we probably played the best game we have in a number of years, which was quite pleasing.
“It’s something that we hope will keep up. We’re going keep a few cards up our sleeve for when we play Armidale, so we won’t show our hand just yet.”
Saints head down to Gunnedah this weekend and are due to take on the Nomads the following week.
