Hawks coach and club president Garry Lavender put the defeat down to be ‘out-enthused’ by the opposition.
“Guyra are a spoiling side, you’ve got to say,” Lavender said.
“We just get in this grind, they score, we score, you know. That’s what we got into over there,” Lavender said.
“They exploited our right-hand edge for a bit and scored a couple of tries there. Obviously the last one was late in the second-half, nearly at full-time, which put them in front.
“So same scenario again.”
I don’t think there is a problem in the team. I just think it’s a matter of working together.
- Garry Lavender
Lavender said the team had no players out due to injury or representative commitments, and said he had no excuses. He agreed it was not a good time for a team to be ‘under-enthused’.
“That’s the first round done with and we’ve had a good look at all the sides now,” Lavender said.
“It’s all going to be close.
“We’ve just got to get our mind on the job. We’ll have five out this weekend, three rep players and two unavailable.”
Hawks will play the Tingha Tigers at the Tingha Sports and Recreation ground, and it is a game that Lavender said he would not be taking for granted.
“If we don’t turn up to play football, then we’ll be looking at the wrong end of the scoreboard again,” Lavender said.
He said the team did not lack fitness and thought it needed to be there for what it was there for, if it was serious about wanting to make it to the semi-finals.
“I don’t think there is a problem in the team. I just think it’s a matter of working together,” Lavender said.
