In its fourth week, the heats are on each Friday night until July 1, with four local singers going on to represent Inverell at the regional NSW finals in Cessnock. The winner of that stage will go on to represent NSW in the Australian Championships, only one step away from singing for their country in the grand finals in Canada.
Despite the excitement of the competition, local karaoke host Rolande Hooklyn said the nights will be open to social karaoke as well.
“It's a really nice way for people to get into the karaoke scene gently,” she said. Rolande said long-timers on the local scene were very welcoming and friendly to newcomers.
“Coming along regularly gives you that confidence to maybe one day give a comp a go,” she said.
“Having a go is fantastic. It’s a growing experience.”
The competition is open to Australian citizens, 18-years and older, and singing hopefuls can keep trying their luck each week, with no restrictions on entering more than once.
Semi-professionals can also enter if their main income is not derived from singing.
Rolande said a strong vocal performance was only half the battle, with judges also looking at attire, entertainment value and audience interaction.
“We have a lot of talent in Inverell, a lot of talent, and I really do hope that everyone who enjoys having a mike in their hand and being an entertainer will give this a go.” The championships kick off at 8pm each Friday, with entries in by 9.30pm.
