DONATING to the Salvation Army’s Red Shield Appeal this year will be as easy as sending a text message. Doorknockers will be making their way around Inverell on Sunday, asking locals to give to the church, which reaches out to over a million vulnerable people each year.

The army provide everything from emergency welfare and addiction recovery programs to homelessness services and rural support.
We have a little catch cry, ‘join the army of hope-givers’ and we give hope to people that there is help available,” Captain Robert Mills said. Captain Mills said in his two years in Inverell, the local army have helped people seeking refuge from abusive relationships, in dire straits after a house fire, and provided food for emergency services like the SES.
If locals don’t receive a knock on the door this year, they will also be able to donate to static points at Freckles cafe, Big W, Pro-active Health Fitness Centre and the Salvation Army Family Store. They can give directly to any Westpac bank. Those without cash in hand can donate $5 by texting BEEF (named for Bindaree Beef) to 1999 2769.
All donations above $2 are tax deductible. If the volunteers knock on the door when the homeowner is away, they will leave an envelope with instructions on how to give to the appeal.
Captain Mills said people are often very welcoming and ready to give the Red Shield Appeal.
“I’ve been collecting, and they’ve had the money set aside, waiting for us when I get there, and they say, ‘I’ve been waiting all day for you’.”
Any locals wishing to help collect are invited to meet with Captain Mills at the Salvation Army Church on Vivian Street at 9am on Sunday.
