Amber Strickland is organising the store’s annual Painted Jeans Competition this year, which donates the funds raised to support research into genetic diseases, birth defects and cancers by the Children’s Medical Research Institute at the Westmead Children’s Hospital.
“Up until August 5, people can come in and give us the painted jeans, of all kinds along with a $5 entry fee and those funds go towards Jeans for Genes Day,” Amber said.
“The jeans are then judged by an independent panel from the Inverell Art Gallery and the winners will get prizes from down in surf-wear and they’ll get their jeans back.
“The overall winner will have the option to sell their jeans to The Premier Store for another $50 gift voucher.”
Premier store owner David Ferris said the business held a good collection of winning jeans from previous years.
“Last year we took up a lot of the previous jeans and they held a big exhibition,” he said.
Mr Ferris said the jeans could seen be in his store’s window this year, but not at the art gallery.
“It’s probably something we would like to do every couple of years,” he said.
He said it was hard to say how much would be raised on the day.
“It is to raise money, but the thing is it’s also to create a more artistic avenue for this kind of art, and some really clever stuff is coming through,” he said.
“You could put it on a canvas and it would look fantastic.”
David said entries were received from all ages in previous years and entries for this year’s competition were now open.
