This offer is open to low income earners and a concession card must be shown when you take your pet to the vet. It is also limited one per household.
Practice manager Zoe O’Brien said it would probably be best if people made their bookings quickly,
“We usually get a good response and people usually take up the offer pretty quickly,” she said.
“The client’s only paying 40 per cent, roughly, of the normal price. The vet clinics do a subsidised price to the RSPCA.”
Gowrie Vet Clinic has been involved for the last two-and-a-half years and practice manager Roz Martin said the cost of de-sexing at the clinic depended on weight, so the percentage discount could vary greatly depending on the size of the dog.
“With the RSPCA it’s the one price for any sized dog, they’ve worked it out that even a small dog is the same price as a large dog,” she said.
“The last program we did we had about 60-70 people take it up and the year before about the same number. It’s popular.
“But at the same time, we’re getting the same numbers come through, which means that we’ve still got the same problem of people not being able to afford de-sexing or vaccinations so they wait until one of the programs come up.”
Treasurer for RSPCA Inverell Allison Lane said $6000 was contributed to the program by the branch, council put in $3300 and the RSPCA Auxiliary donated $1000 to the program.
“We’ve had lots of calls already, there is always good demand,” she said.
In March this year a similar program sourced funding worth $16,500, which saw 48 dogs and 37 cats de-sexed, 54 vaccinations and 26 animals micro-chipped.
Prices for this program are as follows: Dog de-sexing Male $76 Female $96 Cat de-sexing Male $32 Female $68 Vaccinations for both dogs and cats $22.
