Max and Sarah-Jane both felt honoured to be voted into their new roles, which neither expected when they first joined the school.
“When I first joined the SRC in year 7, I will admit it wasn’t entirely my idea, but as a certain someone likes to say, mothers know best,” Max admitted. He said he was immediately attracted to student representive council and what they could do for the school and community.
“I stayed on the SRC for the next four years: my idea this time!”
Sarah-Jane, who joined Macintyre in year 10, said she was drawn to the school because it was special and unique.
“It is such a huge honour,” she said.
Caleb encouraged his successors to be bold, thoughtful, proud and keep their sense of humour. He reminded them to avoid arrogance and laziness and added, “don’t mess up those award names”.
Sarah was proud of the outgoing SRC’s achievements, including bringing in an SRC ideas box, fundraising for Legacy and running leadership workshops alongside Inverell High School at Ross Hill Public School.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall, deputy mayor Anthony Michael and local elder Esther Gardiner were on hand to present the SRC, house captains and junior AECG with their badges. Mr Marshall had some advice for the young leaders.
“If we want to shape the future that we’re in, we don’t just accept what is, but we try and create what can be. We take on those challenges, we take on adversity, we welcome it because we’re leaders and we want to make that change,” he said.
“We’re counting on you. It is your time, and you can do it better than we have done it.”
He challenged the new leaders to spend the next 12 months being bold, creating change wherever it was needed and taking on every hurdle that comes their way with gusto.
Principal Lindsay Paul said “All of us have the capacity to lead, given the right circumstances and given the opportunity.”
