A swagful of more than 300 Dick Smith stores closed at the start of May, and the chain was put into liquidation in July owing more than $260 million to creditors.

Vicinity Centres chief executive Angus McNaughton, presenting the group's results last week, said Vicinity had 41 Dick Smith stores in its portfolio, most of which it had now re-leased.

The electronics retailer's abrupt closure will cut Vicinity's moving annual turnover - a measure of sales - by 50 basis points, partly because Dick Smith sold expensive, big ticket items such as high-definition televisions and computers.

Another property behemoth, Stockland, also found itself caught up in Dick Smith's demise.

The failure of the 16 stores in its portfolio would likely cut its moving annual turnover by $45 million.

Stockland's head of commercial property John Schroder said the chain's collapse was one of nine voluntary administrations in the retail sector in the past eight months.

"Ninety three per cent of the space in connection with these nine voluntary administrations has been either released, open and back trading or is in negotiation," Mr Schroder said.

"The message with all of that is that these are retailers that were selling yesterday's product."

They were too slow to compete, couldn't keep up with changing consumer trends and fell by the wayside, he said.

Scentre Group, which has 40 former Dick Smith stores, said it had re-leased all the outlets at solid rents to a range of retailers.

Supermarket giant Woolworths owned the Dick Smith chain for more than 30 years before selling out to private equity group Anchorage Capital Partners in 2012.

Dick Smith's subsequent collapse came barely two years after Anchorage floated it on the Australian stock exchange.

Woolworths is still extricating itself from the mess.

Its property development subsidiary, Fabcot, has just re-leased a former Dick Smith outlet in Camberwell Junction, in Melbourne's leafy eastern suburbs, to Autobarn on a short-term lease in an off-market deal negotiated by Gorman Kelly agent Samuel Torrance.

Another vacant stand-alone store at 615 Nepean Highway in East Brighton has been taken by Electronics retailer Jaycar, which offers a similar range of products to Dick Smith.

Colliers International director of retail leasing Mike Crittenden said re-letting Dick Smith outlets was "pretty straightforward".

"Dick Smith held some pretty prominent locations in centres, usually close to supermarkets and food courts. They were about 300 to 500 square metres in size so they've been attractive to a range of operators," Mr Crittenden said.

Another Woolies-related venture, the listed property fund Shopping Centres Australasia, revealed last week it owned the freehold of another four Dick Smith stores, which were returning $1 million a year in gross rent.

SCA's three Australian stores had been re-let and a fourth, in New Zealand, sold.
