Last year the couple identified half a dozen rare or collectable books which on their own raised $437.
One of those books was the bushy’s bible, Hungerford’s Diseases of Livestocks, which is out of print but is still hugely invaluable to producers.
Another Hungerford’s has surfaced for this year’s sale which takes place at the Masonic Hall from 8am, Friday, September 30 to noon Sunday, October, October 2.
Mrs Bottom said she expected this book would sell for more than last year’s, depending on how the Rotary club decided to sell it.
Last year the collectables were sold by tender.
“There are so many good books coming in, the public can expect to find a fantastic selection of books selling cheap as chips,’’ she said.
Bill and Margaret know books. Bill has his own personal collection at home of close to 25,000 books.
Margaret owned the Books and Bric a Brac store in town after Bill, who ran Byron Spares, bought her 13,000 books back in 1989 when another bookstore closed down.
She grew the business and had to move shops to get more space – a move that meant she missed out on being affected by the 1991 record flood.
“I moved out three weeks earlier,’’ Margaret said.
The couple retired in 2010 and continue to give back to the community by helping Rotary sell its books.
