It was the reason Deborah walked against dementia on Wednesday along with her daughter, Darrelle, and grand children Kailen and Sienna.
“I’m here to help support the group and to make people aware of dementia and hope a solution can be found.
“Look at these kids; you don’t want them to face it, she said.
“That’s why we’re here – to promote exercise.”
Exercise is one of the five simple steps to keep the brain healthy.
Colleen Beveridge and Barb Holder were there to walk to show their support. Barb’s mum had dementia.
Statistics show more than 353,800 Australians live with dementia and an estimated 1.2 million people are involved in caring for someone with dementia. Many report feel lonely.
September is Dementia Awareness Month.
Inverell Home Support has programs to support people living with dementia and their carers.
Dementia and carer support co-ordinator Sandy Jeffery said the walk was to spread the message that “you are not alone”.
About 50 people turned up for the walk from the Inverell suspension bridge to the Tingha bridge and back.
