“That is wonderful news. We are thrilled and grateful,’’ Peta said.
“It is great for regional cultural development and infrastructure.
“And the town does benefit economically from visitors who come from all over Australia.”
The opera will start at the slightly later time of 6pm on March 25, 2017.
A concert in Armidale will be held the day before, continuing last year’s success
Armidale Regional Council has agreed to sponsorship to the value of $10,000.
At its ordinary council meeting on October 5, council adopted the recommendation that it
sponsor Opera in the Paddock for one performance to be held in Lazenby Hall, in March 2017 and to facilitate masterclasses.
Armidale Regional Council administrator Dr Ian Tiley said Opera in the Paddock was an
established and valued event in the New England calendar that offered an opportunity for musicians and music lovers alike.
“Opera in the Paddock has been running since 2002, but was staged in Armidale for the first time in 2016,” Dr Tiley said.
“The well-established event provides local emerging artists the opportunity to perform alongside established professional performers.
“The orchestra includes many local musicians.”
April 2016 saw the first two day event for Opera in the Paddock with Armidale hosting a Friday evening event followed by the main Opera in the Paddock Saturday event which was held at Delungra.
In 2017, Opera North West will once again provide this double bill.
The 2017 program selection will comprise opera arias, ensembles and selections of operetta.
“In addition to the concert program which offers locals the chance to experience live classical music, a series of masterclasses will be offered to emerging artists covering string, vocal and conducting,” Dr Tiley said.
“The masterclasses offer great benefits to groups such as the Armidale Youth Orchestra, ensembles as well as individuals.”
“Armidale Regional Council is excited to support this event which aligns with the community strategic plan and tourism strategy and Armidale’s reputation as a city for the arts and culture.”
