“It helps heaps. That buys me enough food to last several weeks,” Life chaplain Leonie Pearce said.
“Statistically, we’ve given out over $2000 worth of food – free food – since July last year, and have given out close to $18,000 in EAPA (Energy Accounts Payment Assistance) vouchers to people in need.”
The funds were provided by the Gwydir group of the CWA, who received the funds from the Toongabbie branch, who asked the money be donated to “worthy recipients within the Gwydir Group CWA area”.
Gwydir group identified the pantry as an active charity.
“We were given some money for the group to help people in need, and at our last meeting is was decided we would give $400 to the food pantry, because we know what good work they do,” CWA treasurer Coral Knight said.
The pantry on the corner of Sweaney and Lawrence streets is open Wednesday through Friday, 10am-2.30pm.
Leonie said if people are struggling, they need only to bring in their pension card or simply come in to have a chat about their situation.
