Inverell mayor Paul Harmon will receive the star treatment from the TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training) hairdressing students when he attends the local training salon at the TAFE Inverell campus for a makeover.
The 15 aspiring hairstylists working their magic on the day include students from Macintyre High School, Inverell High School, Glen Innes High School and Southern Cross Distance Education, who are all studying a Certificate II in Salon Assistance as part of their HSC studies.
“I’m delighted to be able to support our local TAFE and TVET students by sitting in the hair chair,” Cr Harmon said.
TAFE NSW has offered hairdressing as a TVET subject to local high school students for the first time this year due to high demand for the subject.
The students learn fundamental salon skills and undertake activities in a work-simulated training environment that equips them with entry-level skills for employment in the industry.
Assistant Minister for Skills and Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said hairdressing is just one of many subjects that HSC students can study at TAFE NSW’s practical learning facilities.
“It’s no surprise that TAFE students are in high demand because of their ability to hit the ground running with relevant, practical skills,” Mr Marshall said.
“The TVET program helps high school students develop real-life skills, knowledge and confidence, which provides them with a competitive edge when entering the workforce full-time.
