The A-grade grand final, to be contested between Staggy Creek and Square & Compass was abandoned due to heavy lead-up rain and unplayable conditions. Council staff were unable to prepare the ground with sections of the oval described as a quagmire.
The 2016-17 A-grade title was awarded to Staggy Creek being minor premiers and the B-grade title was won by Empire Warriors defeating Invincibles.
The awards were held in the presence of life members John Henderson and Noel McCosker.
Life membership was presented to Eric Higgins and Scott Wilson, who was unavailable. During the season some outstanding performances were highlighted.
Mr Henderson spoke of his memory of Varley Oval being referred to as a “cow paddock” some forty years ago and with an active Sports Council and willing citizens, the dreams and plans to turn Varley Oval into the present day sporting showpiece became a reality.
A double century by Nick Cumming, two hat-tricks in the one match by Mick Kenny and a B-grade hat-trick to Sean Walters, 14, featured in a successful season.
The association executive wishes to thank Inverell Shire Council Parks and Garden Staff, STA-FM, Inverell Times, Harold Konz Photography, Chris Rogers (McDonald’s) and sponsors to clubs and the association.
