Essential Energy is warning the public that tampering with the electricity network can be deadly after a series of vandalism incidents near the Inverell Roadhouse on the Gwydir Highway.

In addition to risking their lives, the offenders have also caused several power outages in Inverell, including one on Monday morning which affected 230 households and businesses.
Regional manager Northern, Mark Summers, said damaging or interfering with electrical infrastructure could have fatal consequences.
“Crews were dispatched as soon as we became aware of the malicious damage to the powerline and repairs were undertaken to allow power restoration efforts to begin as quickly as possible,” Mark said.
As the operator of Australia’s largest electricity network, Essential Energy’s top priority is the safety of its customers, employees, contractors and members of the public.
“Not only are the offenders risking their lives, they are also potentially making the network unsafe for others and causing inconvenient power outages for the Inverell community,” Mark said.
“It’s important to be aware of the potential hazards of the electricity network. Electricity can arc or jump – even if wires aren’t touched – resulting in severe burns, electricity shock and even death.”
