The Museum's Kevin Dunn said the attempt was largely foiled by a security team who reportedly arrived on the scene in minutes.
Mr Dunn said the items had more sentimental than financial value. He was confident they would be returned soon.
"The police are onto it," he said.
Mr Dunnn said the thieves lifted a sheet of iron to gain entry to the Museum, but the vehicle displays were not damaged.
In a separate incident, on Monday night, a Landcruiser motor vehicle was stolen from the dealership at 195 Byron Street in Inverell.
Thieves reportedly cut the back fence at the dealership, smashed the window on one vehicle and stole a second.
