Love knows no age - even with our furry family

“We’ve walked a fair few country miles and we’ve got a few more to go,” Kathleen Slack says.

The 72-year-old is the power behind Sissy the Jack Russell’s pram. The two have been together for 19 years, making Sissy 133 years old in human years.

“People say she’s too old but she’s got the pram, she’s in comfort,” Kathleen says.

I met Kathleen and Sissy on their well traveled route down Byron Street and around the corner to St Vincent de Paul.

Today’s trip was interrupted at IGA where Kathleen bought a bag of dog food to see if it interests Sissy.

“She gave up eating dog food a while ago and will only eat what I eat,” Kathleen explains.

Sissy was a gift to Kathleen from one of her sons. If it is possible for the little dog to be even more precious than she already was, that gift became more meaningful when the son died in a car accident in 2011.

It was around that time that Kathleen decided to return home to Inverell.

After years spent living in Sydney and on the Gold Coast, Inverell is the place where Kathleen was born and grew up.

Now Sissy is getting to know the town too.

“Every morning she’s waiting at the front door for us to leave,” Kathleen says. “I wouldn’t leave home without her.”
