For 16-year-old Logan Baxter, the bike was more than a toy. It was his independence while waiting for a driver’s licence, and it was a necessity for his delivery job.
“It was a bit of a shock,” Logan said.
“Since I’ve been here, no one’s ever had their bike stolen.”
Store manager Hayley Underwood said it was the first time something like this had happened in around 50 years of bike deliveries from Ditton’s. She said the free deliveries were an important service for many in the community.
She was disheartened to see Logan lose his bike after spending his holidays working solidly at the pharmacy. He works at least three afternoons a week during the school term.
Logan worked hard to help pay for Merida Big Nine 40 29er which is less than a year old.
Like most delivery boys, Logan didn’t use a chain, as he spends most of his shift on the bike, which is rarely left outside for very long.
“Since this experience I’ve learned a good lesson – better off locking it up,” he said.
Living out of town, he said a bike was his only means of independent transport. The delivery job is part of a path Logan hopes will eventually lead to medicine. He’s just taken a course in order to serve medicines in the store.
