The Inverell High School team travelled to Griffith. After an 11-hour bus trip, they played Griffith High in the state quarter finals of the University shield competition.
Griffith scored two trys in the first half to lead 10 nil. It could have been a lot more except for the tenuous defence shown by the Inverell side against a much bigger opposition, but the team kept repelling them with a lot of first half pressure.
In the second half Inverell where first to score with a great held up pass from Will Mcauillife to a charging Ethan Campbell, making the score 10/6.
Griffith where next to score making it 16/6. Inverell never gave up and were next to score with Brennan Cosgrove making a run with a inside pass to brother Bailey who beat several defenders to score next to the post.
With 6 minutes to go, Inverell hit the lead with a back line movement outside the the 50 see a flying Steve Mcintosh find space and beat the the fullback with speed only to be ankle tapped 3 metres out, he was able to keep his feet to stretch out for the try.
Inverell hit the lead 18/16. Unfortunately a few unforced errors lead to Griffith making their way up field and the very powerful second rower forced his way over the line with Griffith winning 20/18.
It was an excellent overall team effort and with Ethan Campbell being named Players player.
