Funding from $2,000 - $8,000 is available to the local community, including Landcare groups, Aboriginal groups, agriculture groups, other community groups and individual land managers working across the Northern Tablelands on activities or projects which build capacity and community connections.
Regional Landcare Facilitator (Northern Tablelands), Anneka Ferguson, explained the grants aim to assist people to develop the skills and understanding to support the environment and land on which they live and work, and can share valuable best-practice knowledge.
“It’s about education, and building up the knowledge of our local community so that they have the capacity to recognise issues and respond to change,” Anneka said.
Programs funded in 2016 were varied and included educational workshops on the benefits of dung beetles, native bees, pasture and feed assessment, school workshops to seed the future of land and environmental stewardship, and crossed the virtual boundary into the digital world.
Luc Farago from Northern Tablelands Local Land Services sat on the 2016 grant assessment panel and said the value of the grants to the community goes well beyond the dollars distributed to groups.
“Through these types of small community grants and other initiatives, we’re strengthening the partnerships with Landcare in the region – recognising the activities of champions, supporting and professionally facilitating network development and activities that boost sustainable agriculture in the region”, Luc said.
While Landcare groups included in the Tenterfield, Inverell, Glen Innes, Guyra, Armidale, Uralla and Walcha Landcare Network areas are encouraged to apply, non-members may apply directly to New England North West Landcare or could be sponsored by approaching their local Landcare network with their ideas.
