Police suspect the trailer was being towed by a white Toyota Landcruiser which had allegedly failed to stop when directed by New England Local Area Command officers patrolling the Yetman Road earlier that night.
A spokesperson for Fire & Rescue NSW said fuel had flowed into a drain but did not reach the nearby Macintyre River.
Two fire crews from Inverell and a HAZMAT crew from Glen Innes attended the incident where they rinsed and cleaned the drain and recovered about 1000 litres of diesel and water.
The Landcruiser has not yet been located and authorities will conduct a forensic examination of the trailer. Police urge anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.
