Usual cattle buyers were in attendance at the Gunnedah sale yards as restock cattle prices jumped by up to 40 cents a kilogram.

Manilla stock agent Sam Plevey of Plevey Purtle Agencies said the quality of the cattle at this week’s market was high.

“There’s a lot of not quite finished cattle but forward cattle here today,” Mr Plevey said.

“It’s a big turn-around from two to three weeks ago where everyone was just pushing anything out.”

Mr Plevey also said he expected the price of store cattle to rise.

“The unfinished cattle might only improve on fat cattle by 10 cents, but store cattle could get up to 50 or 60 cents.

“There’s no doubt we will see an improvement today both in steers and heifers, both should be around the three dollars a kilo mark.”

Boggabri stock agent Guy Gallen of Jacob Anderson Agencies said there were some re-stockers among the usual buyers.

“There’s a few here today that aern’t normally here having a bit of a go,” Mr Gallen said.

“The quality of the cattle here today is excellent.”

Mr Gallen also said that receiving follow up rain was crucial to cattle prices continuing to improve.

"For the prices to continue to rise a follow up rain is crucial.

“We have seen the market improve just off the back of rain we’ve had recently and follow up rain should see that continue.”

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting more rain for Gunnedah over the coming days.
