“I think our community’s much poorer for his passing,” Councillor Di Baker said of the 81-year-old, who she worked with for a decade.
“He had a kind personality and he was such a gentleman. He had such good manners. He would stand up when a lady came into the room. He was just a beautiful, beautiful man,” she said.
Formerly of Tingha, Warialda and Copeton Dam, Mr Castledine was also known as ‘Casey’. He will be greatly missed by his wife Evelyn, who was a constant support during his council service.
Mayor Paul Harmon, who took his first steps into council life alongside Mr Castledine in 2004, spoke fondly of the man he remembered as reserved but wise.
“He was a very thoughtful, good-hearted man who had the community at the forefront of all decisions that he made,” Cr Harmon said.
“When he did speak on an issue, it was very deep and meaningful, with a lot of thought.”
