It was a young friend’s birthday recently. She was excited because it coincided with World Sandwich Day, a commemoration Subway happily used to make a crust. Sorry.

This got me thinking about how many things might deserve their own special day.
We each have a day of our own when we wake king of our own worlds, expecting a festival that somehow never transpires. Except possibly on World Sandwich Day.
A little research uncovers a wealth of fabulous and less-than-fabulous commemorative days, from National Bloody Mary Day (January 1 – also National Hangover Day), to National Create a Vacuum Day (February 4) and Blashphemy Day (September 30). Do you blaspheme or not blaspheme on this day?
There’s a day there for everyone – World Day of the Sick (February 11 if you want to mark it in for a sickie), World Sparrow Day (March 20), Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you), and International Coffee Day (September 29 – watch out Subway).
As I write, it is National Chicken Lady Day. I kid you not.
If I were to embark on a year of celebrating these days, I’m covered. Chicken for dinner thanks to the unintentionally defrosted fridge. Is there a day for that?
The next day is National Doughnut Day – hang on, am I on the World Obesity Day site? No. Safe to eat doughnuts – or dress as one. It’s also National Love Your Red Hair Day. Tricky. I’ve recently gone blonde.
Siri, take a note. One doughnut costume and red hair dye on the shopping list.
What’s next? National Nachos Day – can do. Saxophone Day. Hmmmn. I think I might be looking at an American site.
The day after? Job Action Day. Forget that, what else have we got? Colour the World Orange Day and National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day. I’m not keen on canine lymphoma, whatever that is, so orange it is.
All jokes aside – except on July 1, which is International Joke Day – there are some sound decisions on the list. Red Nose Day for SIDS (June), Pink Ribbon Day for breast cancer (October) and Daffodil Day for cancer (August). These are days when we stop and think, and possibly donate.
But how many more commemorations can we sandwich in one year? I might just cover it by wearing a red nose, green ribbon, orange shirt and chewing a gum leaf year round.
Got to go now, I’ve just invented a new one. National Nanna Nap Day.
