The Northern Inland Academy of Sport (NIAS) AFL trials were held at Inverell on Sunday, November 5, with a great turn up of some very talented athletes from across the district.
This year trial were conducted for three squads; Junior Boys, Senior Boys and for the first time very Youth Girls.
Head coach Alan Martin from Inverell was impressed by the athletes skills and they great attitude.
“To see so many young people out there, really putting in and having go – it’s what it is all about,” he said.
Ben Ellis, who is a past NIAS AFL athlete and decorated Inverell saints player, has been a welcome addition to the coaching line up – this year coming on board as a trainee coach.
Sam Barber (Inverell Saints grand final winning women’s captain) has also come on board for 2017/2018 with an assistant coach role for the Youth Girls Squad.
The young athelets from Inverell shone – setting the benchmarks in most of the combined skills testing and running.
Jared Martin topped the Junior Boys run at 5.08. His brother Lachie Martin was equal fastest in the Senior Boys at 4.39. Kyla Hamilton finished first for the Youth Girls in 5.32, with Kelsie Julius taking honors in the skills testing with a score of 40/50.

Athletes that haven’t been able to trial yet can contact the NIAS office and trial on Sunday, November 19, at 10am at the sporting complex, Eucalypt Drive Inverell.
