The girls are self-nominated. On September 11, contestants presented themselves at the Inverell Tourism Centre for the official launch of the Festival where they faced initial interviews as part of the competition.
In finery and fascinators, each girl will respond to questions as they face the crowd at the Holy Trinity Race Day, October 19. Ann Clydesdale is on the festival committee and said there will be two judges hidden in the crowd to assess the girls’ appearance and deportment.
A Sapphire City Queen has been crowned all 57 years of the festival, but the Princess categories have been added more recently.
Perks of being a Queen include handing our raffle awards, presentations and attending events all over town for their reigning year. The younger princesses also gain a sense of community and meet new friends.
“It’s all about the girls coming out, having fun, meeting new people, being able to have the option to get dressed up and be on the floats, be a part of the parade,” Ann said.
“Have a bit of fun. Basically, that’s what it is.”
All the contestants will attend festival events before the conclusion of the festival. Winners will be announced at the crowning ceremony, capping off a full two weeks of regional celebration.
